Many companies on the Internet depend on search traffic to generate business or leads and we are no exception. Google represents the vast majority of web searches and is by far the most important search engine for us all.
To get a high ranking in Google is not an easy task, and it takes a lot of work and knowledge to end up on the first page. Very few users click on to the second page, so it’s more or less crucial that your business is listed among the first ten results for the search word or keywords that your potential customers are likely to use.
When we launched our own web site in the middle of June we had to start from the beginning with a new domain name on a very competitive market. If you search for “web design chiang mai” you will end up with close to two million results. Of course most of these results are not relevant, but there are a lot of established companies that do offer web design in Chiang Mai.
Needless to say, we were facing a huge challenge. How do we do to get on the first page of Google with all this competition? It was not easy, but we managed to go from page six to the top 5 (on page one) in little over just two months.
Here is how we did it
Google has changed a lot the last two years and the search engine now uses a completely different algorithm than before. Back in the old days it was possible to trick Google by using so called meta keywords and the use of link farms that provide many links back to your web site. The more links you had pointing to your web site, the higher page rank Google would give you. This has now changed, and for the better.
Today Google is a lot cleverer and has introduced new technologies that go under the names of Penguin, Panda & Humming Bird. These technologies actually analyse the content on your page and can determine if it is relevant and of high quality. To put it simple, Google uses artificial intelligence to find the best content. This is great for the end user, but it poses a challenge for us doing business and SEO on the Internet.
This does not mean that backlinks still are important, but the links has to come from relevant web sites that already rank high in Google for them to have any effect. A few valuable links from high profile web sites are therefore worth more than thousands of links from irrelevant and low ranking sites. When you think about, it makes sense in most cases.
The basic requirements for getting a good ranking in Google today are:
Relevant page titles
Quality content (do not overuse keywords)
Backlinks from high-ranking web sites
Good server speed to reduce load time
Mobile friendly responsive design
There are few more parameters that you can throw into the soup, but these are the basic requirements and makes for a great start.
Once we started working on our site and optimised it according to the above requirements we noticed that our ranking started to rise quickly in Google. Within a few weeks we ended up on page 5, next week page 4 and so on. During this time we worked hard on getting relevant links from other web sites and tweaking our server speed.
After about two months we finally ended up on page one. Note that during this time we did not add any new content, we focused on getting links and optimise certain things on our pages such as images, load times and mobile responsiveness (load time on mobile devices).
The tricky thing about Google is that not only do different users get different results; you will also get different results on different devices. That means a search on a desktop computer will give you a different result compared to a smartphone or tablet. Since tablets are becoming increasingly popular, it is as important to rank high both on a desktop search as it is on a mobile device.
Today we are proud to say that Creative Chili rank between second and third place for the search term “web design chiang mai” on a desktop search, and we got the first spot on mobile devices. Note that search results do vary depending on the person since Google uses personalised search results. But we are finally above the magic top 5-results.
What we learned from this was invaluable and now we apply the same techniques for all our customers. Nobody can guarantee you to end up on the top spot, since it depends on so many factors. But we can guarantee you that we will increase your ranking significantly.
